This year’s Women’s History Month theme is Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Story. “The timely theme honors women in every community who have devoted their lives and talents to producing art, pursuing truth, and reflecting the human condition decade after decade.” Here are 12 quotes for Women’s History month from some of the women being celebrated.

Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Jovita Idar, Maya Angelou. Middle: Gerda Lerner, Gloria Steinem, Winona La Duke, Lillian Hellman. Bottom: Betty Soskin, Willa Cather, Gertrude Stein, Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Women’s rights is not only an abstraction, a cause; it is also a personal affair. It is not only about us; it is also about me and you. Just the two of us.

Toni Morrison

I learned to make my mind large, as the universe is large, so that there is room for contradictions.

Maxine Hong Kingston

Educate a woman, and you educate a family

Jovita Idar

I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels.

Maya Angelou

Men have been given the impression that they’re much more important in the world than they actually are—and that’s not a good way to become a human being.

Gerda Lerner

We’ve begun to raise daughters more like sons… but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.

Gloria Steinem

The first thing I am is a person. I am a woman. And I am part of a nation, the Indian nation. But people either relate to you as an Indian or as a woman. They relate to you as a category. A lot of people don’t realize that I am not that different from everyone else.

Winona La Duke

Unjust. How many times I’ve used that word, scolded myself with it. All I mean by it now is that I don’t have the final courage to say that I refuse to preside over violations against myself, and to hell with justice.

Lillian Hellman

What gets remembered is determined by who is in the room doing the remembering.

Betty Soskin

The fact that I was a girl never damaged my ambitions to be a pope or an emperor.

Willa Cather

It is funny that men who are supposed to be scientific cannot get themselves to realise the basic principle of physics, that action and reaction are equal and opposite, that when you persecute people you always rouse them to be strong and stronger.

Gertrude Stein

You have to stand up for some things in this world.

Marjorie Stoneman Douglas
