It’s a surprising title, isn’t it? I love Vision Boards and write about them all the time. But they can also be useless if people aren’t using them right. Do you want to know why your Vision Board is Crap?
The problem starts when you think that creating a Vision Board is the end goal. It’s not. You can’t create a Vision Board and sit back on your couch and wait for good things to happen!
You actually have to get up and work towards your goal. Yep! I said it. That dirty word, “work.” And the other thing you need to do is recognize opportunities when they present themselves.
In a previous post on why vision boards don’t work, I speak specifically to that. Recognizing the need to work towards your goals and recognizing the opportunities when they come along. Not always easy if you’re just paying attention to your one small goal and not to bigger or different opportunities that come along which will help you reach your goal.
Once you create that Vision Board, you need to hang it up where you can see it on a daily basis. By looking at your goals each day, by repeating out loud what you’re working toward then you put the seed in your brain. The key here is that what you focus on expands. In What You Focus on Expands, I talk about this phenomenon.
And now that you understand the importance of Vision Boards, don’t think you have to wait until January 1st in order to create one. In Is There Ever a Wrong Time to Create a Vision Board, we explore the different times and ways you can create a Vision Board. The short answer is any time and any way.
I hope you feel inspired to create your Vision Board and use it to help you move in the direction of your goals. I’m creating a new one tonight that’s just focused on my blog and my goals for it. What’s your Vision Board about?

Yes, the title of the blog caught me! And yes, you are absolutely right…. about doing the work, being aware of the opportunities. I do hang my vision board where I can see it daily. I do connect my vision board to my monthly, weekly and daily plans. And I do believe it all works together to move me closer and closer to my vision of the retirement lifestyle I want. So … MY vision board isn’t Crap. 🙂
Hi Jennifer, I wasn’t sure whether I had read this post and then I realized it was a title with a similar name. I have always liked the phrase “What you focus on expands.” I created a vision board at a vision board party party a couple of years ago. I credit this with the reason I have resumed writing and starting up a blog. Thought-provoking post:)
Your thoughts on vision boards are always inspiring Jennifer, especially the phrase about where your focus is. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and links. Shared for #mlstl
I agree with you about putting your vision board where you can see it every day and start working on it at any time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. #MLSTL
Yep, the title got me. Oh my goodness, you’re telling me I actually have to work to make things happen? Perish the thought. LOL. So many people don’t recognise opportunities for what they are or open that door when there’s the teeniest bit of light coming through it. I don’t have a vision board, but I do have statements that are front and centre every day. I write my little mantra on the top of my journal pages, every page, as I write. Great post. #MLSTL
I kind of wondered why Vision Boards never really inspired me Jennifer – now I get it….. I actually have to make positive steps in the direction they’re pointing me to! Maybe sometime down the track I’ll have another go at the process, but for now I think I’ll just live in the present and wait until I need some inspiration to move out of my comfortable little niche.
Thanks for linking up with us at MLSTL and I’ve shared on my SM 🙂
I don’t have a vision board. Maybe I should, but my head has so much trouble keeping up with all I want and need to do already so it might need to wait a while I think. I love the concept of them though!
Jennifer, just like goals and resolutions, if we never pay attention to them, they are simply words on paper. Thanks for the reminder that we actually have to DO something to achieve our dreams. #mlstl
Thanks for stopping by, Suzanne. Yes. Action is part of the process in order to achieve our goals.
I think I tried a vision board once. I also tried positive affirmations. Both left me cold. Now I realise “I” make my life happen and for the past 2-3 years blogging, keeping an on-line journal, doing some art, and getting out into nature are all combining to help me continue to be well after my initial cancer diagnosis in May 2017.
