Today is National Renewal Day. As an advocate for self-care, I feel that taking care of yourself, setting aside “me-time” is as important as taking care of someone else…more important. There are a lot of self-care techniques, including using gemstones. New Agey woo-woo stuff? Maybe. Here’s how gemstones can help with renewal.

As they say, how can you take care of someone else if you’re not taking care of yourself first? It’s why you’re always told to put the oxygen mask on yourself first. And sure, wouldn’t we all like to get a massage or a mani/pedi to get some of that me time. But that’s not the only thing you can do. I wrote a small list of self-care ideas in my recent post about how stress affects you.

But there’s another thing I do that I believe helps with my renewal. I wear special gemstone bracelets. Do you remember the first time you ever learned about gemstones? My first memories are of knowing that Topaz was the birthstone for November. I remember one Mother’s Day we gave my mother a pin with all of our birthstones.

Since that day, I’ve always been intrigued by different gemstones. It’s the symbolism I connect with. I would give my sister Joni things made with amethyst because that was her birthstone. When my mother had a triple by-pass I gave her a heart made out of rose quartz. When I want to calmly connect with my creativity I wear a bracelet made of howlite and sodalite beads.

Lately, I’ve been getting all of my gemstone bracelets from one place. Zen Mala Creations. Crystal (what an appropriate name) creates all the bracelets and keychains that she sells. She’s mindful of their meanings and picks stones that connect to each other and work well together.

My sodalite and howlite bracelet is one example. She made it for me after we collaborated on what effect I wanted. And that’s what I really appreciate about Crystal. If you can’t find exactly what you want, she’ll work with you to create it.
