Found an old stash of women’s magazines in a box at my mother’s house. Years ago, she put them in there to read when she had time….that was back in the 1980’s. It was fun to pull them out and take a look and realize we’ve come a long way, baby!
Ladies Home Journal, McCall’s, Redbook, Women’s Day and New Woman. Ladies Home Journal ceased monthly publication last year. McCall’s hasn’t been seen since 2001 when it turned into Rosie (remember when Rosie O’Donnell had a magazineand then stopped publication the following year. I can’t find anything about New Woman magazine except a couple of old copies for sale on eBay. Only Redbook and Women’s Day are still in regular publication.
How many had subscriptions to Columbia House? 11 tapes for a penny, how could you pass up that deal?
And the hairstyles? The start of the big hair era. I wore a curly perm hairstyle for years.
And all the cigarette ads–12 of them in one magazine, more than the make-up ads. All were like this one, giving the impression that smoking was cool. Do you see something missing from the ad? It wasn’t until 1984 that the Surgeon General’s warning about smoking was required to be placed on all magazine ads.
Hope you enjoyed this look back in time. Have you ever opened a box and found an interesting look at the past?
