Halloween is almost here and all I have to say is, “Amuck!  Amuck!  Amuck!”

Amuck because the weather is awful.  Wind and rain.  More like a deluge.

Amuck because it’s cold and miserable. Like most Halloweens in Connecticut.

Amuck because I love Hocus-Pocus!

But that’s not what this post is about.  Instead, I wanted to share my childhood memories of Halloween and scary things.

  • Trick or Treating with my older brothers
  • Full-size candy bars
  • The older kids always wanted to be a bum
  • But sometimes went as ghosts or witches instead
  • I always wanted one of the pre-packaged costumes
  • We live in Connecticut so no matter how pretty my pre-packaged costume…I always had to wear a coat.
  • Trick or Treating in the dark.  Daylight savings time was extended in 2007, which means kids today go out in the twilight, not the dark.
  • Pillowcases for candy bags
  • Unpackaged candy.  I trick or treated in an age before razor blades in candy.
  • And hand-made popcorn balls that we were allowed to eat
  • The fun of raking leaves into scarecrows–which along with pumpkins were pretty much the only Halloween decorations
  • Carving pumpkins and making freshly baked pumpkin seeds
  • The Monster Mash
  • The Adams Family  and Dark Shadows (original TV shows!)

What are some things that you remember from Halloween when you were a child?
