Halloween is almost here and all I have to say is, “Amuck! Amuck! Amuck!”
Amuck because the weather is awful. Wind and rain. More like a deluge.
Amuck because it’s cold and miserable. Like most Halloweens in Connecticut.
Amuck because I love Hocus-Pocus!
But that’s not what this post is about. Instead, I wanted to share my childhood memories of Halloween and scary things.
Trick or Treating with my older brothers
Full-size candy bars
The older kids always wanted to be a bum
But sometimes went as ghosts or witches instead
I always wanted one of the pre-packaged costumes
We live in Connecticut so no matter how pretty my pre-packaged costume…I always had to wear a coat.
Trick or Treating in the dark. Daylight savings time was extended in 2007, which means kids today go out in the twilight, not the dark.
Pillowcases for candy bags
Unpackaged candy. I trick or treated in an age before razor blades in candy.
And hand-made popcorn balls that we were allowed to eat
The fun of raking leaves into scarecrows–which along with pumpkins were pretty much the only Halloween decorations
Carving pumpkins and making freshly baked pumpkin seeds
The Monster Mash
The Adams Family and Dark Shadows (original TV shows!)
What are some things that you remember from Halloween when you were a child?

What a fun list! We just did our jack-o-lanterns yesterday, which meant I roasted seeds we’ve been munching on. And, since we’re in Maryland, we use Old Bay seasoning on them!
Old Bay seasoning on Pumpkin seeds? Hmm, I’ve had it on onion rings before and those were the best onion rings I’ve ever had but never thought to put it on pumpkin seeds. Will have to give it a try!
Ah – Halloween memories for me are birthday memories that come with very mixed feelings that I’ll share one day. Thank you for sharing your memories – they sound like happy ones!
I’m sorry there are mixed feelings there.
